Tomar - Portugal: The Templar Castle and Convent of Christ The Templar Castle and Convent of Christ in Tomar reflect the intertwined histories of Portugal's formation and the Templar Knights. Founded in 1160 by the Templars, the castle played a key role in the Reconquista against Muslim forces. Defended by Gualdim Pais and 200 knights, it withstood a major siege in 1190 by Moroccan ruler Yakub Al-Mansur. Over centuries, the fortress-monastery expanded, becoming a masterpiece of Gothic and Manueline architecture adorned with naval motifs symbolizing Portugal's maritime dominance. The Templar Order transitioned to the Order of Christ in 1318, preserving its power and wealth. Under Prince Henry the Navigator, the Order supported Portugal's Age of Discovery. Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1983, the complex remains a testament to Templar heritage, attracting global visitors. Today, it is a "stone book" telling Portugal's story, blending history, art, and spirituality.
